The statue of the child refers to the defining moment in St. Marina's life. She had been posing as a man so that she could continue in the monastery in which her father had fraudulently enrolled her. But later she was accused of fathering a local woman's child and was expelled to the monastery's outer gate, where the child joined her after it was weaned.
Both the child and the crucifix are regular attributes in images of St. Marina the Monk. The crucifix may refer to her devotion and/or to her raising the child in the Christian faith, as she is pictured doing in this painting from the 19th century.
